Pakistan textile mills seek government help for stuck cotton imports
Pakistan's textile industry is facing a crisis as imported cotton shipments from the US and Brazil are being held up at ports for months. The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has urged the Prime Minister to intervene. The issue stems from expired import permits due to unforeseen delays during transit. Despite valid permits, the Directorate General of Plant Protection (DG DPP) is withholding release orders.
APTMA claims DG DPP is linking these delays to an ongoing investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). They argue this is an "arbitrary decision" causing financial strain due to demurrage charges and hurting the industry's ability to meet export targets. Textile mills have appealed to the government for resolution but no action has been taken by DG DPP. APTMA fears this is damaging Pakistan's economy and textile sector competitiveness.
They have urged the Prime Minister to address the issue swiftly to prevent further financial losses and ensure smooth cotton imports, crucial for the industry's survival.
