India, a textile powerhouse, also plays a key role in global wool production. This industry is particularly important for rural areas with suitable climates for sheepherding. India annually produces around 43-46 million kg of wool, contributing roughly two per cent globally. However, domestic consumption far outpaces production, with wool imports heavily relied upon. Despite this, India boasts the world's seventh-largest wool and woolen industry, highlighting its global significance and its role in rural livelihoods.

Rajasthan reigns supreme as India's top wool producer, with over 15 million kg annually. This translates to over 30 per cent of the national wool production. Renowned for its eight sheep breeds known for high-quality carpet wool, Rajasthan has 70 wool processing units. Interestingly, 85 per cent of the state's wool production falls under the carpet grade category.
