Shein, a global online fashion and lifestyle retailer, has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by developing an advanced polyester recycling process in partnership with Donghua University, a leading institution in textile research and innovation.

The new process can recycle a wide range of materials, including pre- and post-consumer polyester, textile waste, and PET bottles. This versatility enhances the sourcing of feedstock and significantly lowers costs compared to existing recycled polyester options used by Shein.

To scale the technology from laboratory development to commercial production, Shein plans to collaborate with selected fibre manufacturers. This initiative is expected to drive the production of recycled polyester fibres at a larger scale, contributing to a more sustainable textile industry.

Leonard Lin, President of EMEA and Global Head of Public Affairs at Shein, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging innovation and technology to tackle industry challenges. Lin stated that this partnership reflects Shein’s broader strategy to enhance sustainability and reshape the future of fashion through responsible practices.
