The South India Spinners Association (SISA) has sounded the alarm on the deteriorating condition of the Tamil Nadu textile industry. Over the past two fiscal years, the industry has grappled with soaring raw material costs, primarily cotton and man-made fibers, leading to widespread mill closures, job losses, and dwindling exports.

SISA has urged the Central government to take immediate action to revive the ailing sector. The association has proposed two key measures as eliminating import duties on cotton will significantly reduce raw material costs, making domestic mills more competitive in both domestic and international markets.

The government should facilitate access to credit at reasonable interest rates for micro and small-scale textile mills. This will empower them to modernize their operations and sustain their businesses.

SISA emphasizes that timely government intervention is crucial to prevent further deterioration of the sector and safeguard the livelihoods of numerous workers.
