Spinnova introduces sustainable cotton alternative in Bangladesh

Finnish textile innovation company Spinnova is offering an innovative alternative to cotton with its cellulose fibre, made from wood pulp through a chemical-free, recyclable process. Developed over a decade, Spinnova’s technology minimizes environmental impact and is now ready for large-scale production, according to Shahriare Mahmood, Spinnova’s chief product and sustainability officer.
Speaking at a seminar in Dhaka, Mahmood, highlighted Spinnova’s collaboration with NZ Denim to develop sustainable denim in Bangladesh over the past two years. The Spinnova fibre maintains the texture and absorbency of natural fibres like cotton and linen and outperforms them in thermal resistance a quality Adidas has validated through lab tests and used in its latest eco-friendly hoodie line.
Spinnova’s innovative fibre presents a promising solution amid declining global cotton production due to climate challenges. Mahmood indicated that the technology could be a cost-effective option for the organic cotton market, with future potential to serve as a direct cotton alternative.
At the seminar organized by SAS Enterprise, industry leaders discussed Bangladesh’s readiness to adopt eco-friendly textile solutions. A Matin Chowdhury of New Asia Group and Saleudh Zaman Khan of NZ Tex Group addressed the importance of sustainable innovation to secure the sector’s future in global markets.
