Powerloom weavers in Tamil Nadu are urging Chief Minister M K Stalin to intervene and persuade the Central government to reconsider the proposed quality control order (QCO) on viscose rayon staple spun yarn. The Tamil Nadu Federation of Powerloom Associations argues that such a move would further dampen the already struggling viscose textile chain.

Tamil Nadu, home to nearly 25 lakh powerlooms, has seen a significant shift from cotton to viscose weaving in recent years. The state's powerloom industry heavily relies on viscose staple yarn, with 70 per cent of the domestic production being consumed locally.

However, the introduction of QCO on viscose fiber last year has led to a series of challenges. The monopoly in fiber production has resulted in shortages and price hikes. To meet the demand, mills resorted to imports, which were cheaper than domestic supplies. But the QCO on fiber curtailed imports, further disrupting the market.

The proposed QCO on viscose yarn is seen as another setback for the powerloom industry. It could lead to more powerlooms being sold as scrap due to the sluggish market conditions. The Federation urges the Chief Minister to take up the issue with the Centre and advocate for the removal of QCOs on textiles, to safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of powerloom weavers in the state.
