Textile recycling gets a boost with new circularity initiative.
Textile waste is a major environmental problem, but New York-based non-profit Accelerating Circularity is tackling it head-on with their new Building Circular Systems (BCS) initiative.
Launched recently, BCS aims to supercharge the development of large-scale textile-to-textile (T2T) recycling systems, significantly reducing dependence on virgin materials. Building on previous trials successfully incorporating 40 per cent recycled content into fabrics, BCS focuses on three key areas:
Scaling up: By expanding trials across the US and EU, BCS will demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale T2T recycling, paving the way for wider adoption.
Smarter sorting: The "Textile Hierarchy Tool" will be developed, guiding the optimal processing of used textiles to maximize resource savings and minimize environmental impact.
Sharing knowledge: Educational resources and tools will be readily available, empowering companies to implement circular T2T systems in their own operations.
Karla Magruder, Founder and President, Accelerating Circularity, emphasizes the significance of this milestone, stating it represents a significant advancement in the organization's mission to establish commercial circular textile-to-textile systems. By fostering collaboration and providing industry tools and education, Accelerating Circularity aims to drive positive change in the supply chain, moving towards a future where textiles are no longer wasted.
