Textiles Minister: BT cotton approval coming soon.

In a welcome announcement for the Indian textile industry, Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh hinted at the imminent approval of a new, superior variety of Bt cotton for commercial cultivation. This development is expected to boost the sector's competitiveness and benefit farmers.

Singh highlighted that trials for this Herbicide Tolerant (HT) Bt cotton, also known as BG III cotton, are ongoing. Upon successful completion of assessments by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) and the receipt of necessary approvals, the government will permit commercial cultivation of this new variety.

The Minister's statement comes amidst concerns regarding manpower shortages in the textile industry. He also mentioned initiatives being undertaken to leverage Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to address this challenge.

The adoption of Bt cotton, which possesses resistance to bollworm infestation, has revolutionized cotton production in India. This new HT Bt variety promises further advantages, potentially increasing yield and reducing reliance on herbicides. Industry experts believe this approval will significantly enhance India's textile production capacity and empower farmers.
