Uster Technologies hosts industry leaders to tackle recycled yarn challenges

Uster Technologies recently convened textile industry leaders in Switzerland to discuss the challenges and opportunities of using recycled raw materials. Indian spinners met experts from Rieter, Santis-Textiles, Otto Yarns, Gherzi Textile Organization, and TVU to explore sustainability and business prospects in recycled yarns.
Experts presented different approaches to improving recycled yarn quality. Michael Will from Rieter suggested an additional step between mechanical opening and spinning, while Andreas Merkel of Otto Yarns emphasized better results with pre-consumer fibers. Stefan Hutter of Santis-Textiles predicted a growing market for both industrial and post-consumer waste-based yarns.
Despite increasing demand, key concerns remain. Thomas Franz from TVU highlighted the challenges in dyeing and sourcing, as recycled yarns differ significantly from virgin fibers. Pricing also remains an issue, with retailers reluctant to pay more for recycled garments. Giuseppe Gherzi of Gherzi Textile Organization stressed that legislative action is crucial for industry-wide change.
Optimizing production and scaling up operations could make recycled yarns more cost-effective. Experts agree that integrating recycled fibers in standard blends is the way forward, ensuring quality while balancing cost and sustainability in the evolving textile market.
