WWEPC drives India’s push into global sustainable textile market with hemp-wool blend
The Wool and Woolens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC), led by chairman Romesh Khajuria and Executive Director Suresh Thakur, hosted a gathering on December 27, 2024, at Udyog Bhavan, Ministry of Textiles. The event focused on blending hemp and wool to establish India as a leader in sustainable textiles.
Key stakeholders, including Karan Sarsar (Awega Green Technologies), Shripat Jagirdar (Weaving Vibes), Shridhar Jagirdar (Karishma Exports), and agriculturist Kanika Sood, highlighted the potential of hemp-wool textiles in meeting global demand for eco-friendly fabrics. Discussions emphasized international collaborations, including potential MOUs with South Korea, to enable technology transfer and investment.
Plans for Bharat Tex 2025 were unveiled, featuring hemp-focused pavilions, sustainable fashion shows, and conferences to spotlight innovative products. Awega Green Technologies also announced a pilot project for industrial hemp farming in Uttarakhand, aimed at boosting farmer incomes and creating a sustainable supply chain.
Textile Minister Giriraj Singh committed to advancing hemp production policies, aligning efforts with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami. WWEPC leaders expressed optimism about India’s potential to lead the sustainable textile movement, with initiatives poised to redefine the global eco-friendly fashion landscape.
