The Indian textile industry is grappling with the reinstatement of the 11 per cent cotton import duty following the expiration of the government’s temporary waiver on December 31. This policy shift has driven domestic cotton prices to approximately Rs 59,000 per candy, significantly exceeding international rates of Rs 53,000. In response, the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has formally appealed to the Union Agriculture Ministry for duty-free access, arguing that the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism, recently adjusted upward by 8 per cent already secures farmer interests without compromising the industry's external competitiveness.
