Farmers leading cotton-producing state, Gujarat are reducing their cotton cultivation, opting instead for oilseeds like peanuts and soybeans. This year, cotton acreage in the state has decreased by approximately 13 per cent. As of August 4, the area planted with cotton in Gujarat was 2.035 million hectare, a decline from 2.335 million hectare last year. This is also well below the state's typical cultivation area of 2.534 million hectare.

As global supply chains grapple with geopolitical tensions and US tariffs, major Indian textile clusters Tiruppur and Surat are exploring a strategic collaboration to boost the country’s man-made fiber (MMF) trade. This initiative aims to increase India's position in the global MMF market, currently dominated by China.

Driven by a strong domestic demand, particularly for the extra-long staple variety, India's cotton imports increased to a record high in the 2024-25 season, ending September. Starting FY26 on a strong note, GHCL Textiles reported a 14 per cent Y-o-Y increase in profit after tax (PAT) for the first quarter. The company posted a PAT of Rs 14 crore, even as revenue declined by 6 per cent to Rs 270 crore, primarily due to a reduction in yarn export volumes.

Flagship company of the Trident Group, Trident Ltd registered a 89.39 per cent Y-o-Y and 4.89 per cent Q-o-Q rise in net profit to Rs 140 crore in Q1, FY26. However, the company’s revenue declined by1.75 per cent Y-o-Y decline to Rs 1,727 crore during the quarter. . .

In terms of value, the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.9 per cent over the same period, reaching an estimated $14.8 billion by the end of 2035. India is expected to emerge as a crucial player in this growing market, with substantial consumption, production, and trade volumes.

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for textiles has attracted investments totaling Rs 7,343 crore, according to recent figures. This capital injection has already generated a turnover of Rs 4,648 crore and exports worth Rs 538 crore, highlighting the scheme's early impact on the sector.
